Positron Emission Tomography (PET)PET is a branch of the Nuclear Medicine department that provides physicians with information about the body’s chemical function.For oncology patients, PET is used to determine the exact location and stage of cancerous tissue. PET can reveal metastatic disease that other imaging techniques simply cannot reveal. On the day of your procedure you will receive an injection into a vein in your arm of a radioactive liquid. You will rest in the PET suite for 45 minutes as the medication circulates through your system. You will then lie on the PET table. You will be positioned in a machine similar to a CT machine. Images will be acquired as the table moves in and out of the PET machine. As with any x-ray, inform the technologist if there is any possibility that you may be pregnant.
